Behind Resurrection People...
Ninety percent of the lyrics on this project are those penned by
ancients inspired by the Holy Spirit of God and written for you. The
remaining words and music comes from my heart, and my hope is that
it finds yours.
“Rejoice in the
Lord always; again I will say Rejoice.” Phil 4:4. It is right that
we begin this hour together with the fullest praise we can offer to
Almighty God. December is the time of year we prepare our
hearts to receive the newborn King and His message of hope and
promise. We anticipate His coming into the world, His call to
repentance and New Life, and His coming again bringing eternal life.
David got it right in Psalm 150, and the whole
gang got in there with me before the rocks started crying out. If
you are breathing, I hope you sing along with us. If you are not
breathing, I hope you are still singing out.
But Sometimes,
like Job, it is hard to praise you, Lord. We cannot discern the
unintended consequences of our actions from our basic fallen nature.
Answers do not satisfy; they seem beyond us. I wrote this way back
when and I find, now in midlife, that the only real solution is
still to just keep walking in faith with the One who is The Answer.
1 Corinthians 13, Paul’s great song of Love, is the first Spirit Lyric I
ever tried setting to music. I wrote it for my cousin Cher’s
wedding, and later played it at my sister Karen’s wedding. Both
times I was honored to rehearse it with my dad’s cousin Winston
singing the vocal. I wish he could have been here to record with us
on this project, but he has been busy singing for the angels.
Every summer, Resurrection Lutheran Church in Monticello has an
outdoor family fun and worship event in the big green field out
behind the building. A few years back I was listening to one of the
music groups and noticed how the wind would blow the sound, the
sheet music, and the tree branches all around. Jason and I discussed
writing a song about The Wind together, and one
night he came to rehearsal with the start of a song that became the
intro, bridge and chorus. I added the verses and lyrics and the rest
is history. The same wind that moved over the water at creation;
that moved the waves under Jesus feet, and rushed into the room with
the disciples, caresses our face every day. Let it blow into your
heart as well.
Forty days in the wilderness. Unseen angels behind every boulder;
demons hiding in the deep shadows. The Son of Man meets the father
of lies in a cosmic battle of the will and defeats him. “Man shall
not live by bread alone, but by Ev’ry Word that proceeds
from the mouth of God” Matthew 4:4. The Risen Savior defeats him
again at the empty tomb. The Glorious King will defeat him eternally
when He returns to earth. Many thanks to the kids seeking to confirm
their faith that helped write this song. I pray that His Word will
dwell in you richly.
In worship we do not only sing about God, but to Him. We declare to
Him our love, our repentance, our child-like faith and trust. He has
made us His Resurrection People
through grace, and sends us out to bring New Life to a dying world.
When the time came to rise up, move out of the school we were
meeting at, and build our first church home this song became our
prayer and anthem. “And like Living Stones be
yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a royal priesthood,
to offer spiritual sacrifices to God through Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter
2:5
The 23rd Psalm is a great psalm of comfort and peace, but also a
great psalm of joy and affirmation. It is in this spirit that
The
Lord Is My Shepherd was written. I apologize to
the parents whose children ask them to play it ten times in a row in
the van. My advice to you is to learn the lyrics and sing along with
them. Too soon they will be off driving their own cars around.
Yes, I Know
was written in my pickup banging on the steering wheel on the way
back from an ice fishing trip to Mille Lacs Lake. Even though it has
an island feel, remember it started out on two feet of ice. I guess
the gospel message can warm even the coldest heart and feet.
Jesus had all of eternity before he was born on earth, and
thirty-three years of life on this planet. The last things He could
tell his disciples, the most important things He wanted them to
remember, all came down to one Thursday night as contained in the
gospel of John chapters 13-17. And what of the disciples caught
somewhere between the Last Supper and the night before the unknown
Resurrection of our Lord? Gather with us as we reflect on those two
days after their last meal with Jesus in the Upper Room.
What happens when a Christian chooses to sin? If Jesus could
forgive those who crucified Him because they knew not what they do,
can He also forgive those who know what they do?
The guys sing
David’s Song from Psalm 42-43. Psalm 78:1-8
contains every father’s hope and prayer: that even the children yet
unborn would come to know and love their God even more fully than we
have known Him.
May our Legacy be one of courage, compassion,
calling, and built upon Christ the Cornerstone of all we are.
Repentance and Forgiveness is all that keeps us going through life.
The Spirit calls us to turn around and reflect on What Really
Matters.
A few years back we had an outdoor worship service on the banks of
the Mississippi River in Monticello and the reading for the day was
from Amos chapter 5. I wrote Let Justice Rollfor
that service one afternoon at the Minneapolis Convention Center
waiting for a ride after attending a seminar. Kurt gave me that
great “A” chord that brought the whole song together.
My devotions recently brought me back to Amos and the Spirit spoke
clearly to me in the middle of recording this song. “I’ve had all I
can take of your noisy ego-music. When was the last time you sang to
Me? Do you know what I want? I want justice – oceans of it. I want
fairness – rivers of it. That’s what I want. That’s all I want.”
Amos 5: 21-24 from The Message. Just so you know, Lord, this
last hour I was singing to you. Thanks for Your Life, Your Love,
Your Grace, and Your Friendship.
I spent 30 years thinking I would somehow put together a CD on my
own and it never happened. Now, in the fullness of time, all these
friends and family have come along beside me and made some music. We
pray that it would be a blessing to you. Thanks to Robin, Ketti, and
JohnLars for your love and support, Upper Room, Todd and RLC for
your encouragement and Barry for letting me be his assistant
engineer. You were right, the accordion is just nice.
